MAIL ON SUNDAY

Strathmore Ladies took part in the Mail on Sunday competition at Dunkeld on Saturday. The team consisted of Sandy Bushy, Alexandra Bushby, Dawn Butchart, Janet Griffiths and Sheena Scott.

The competition is played in 5 single knockout ties. There is a point for a win and half a point for a half. Sheena Scott was in the first tie and was narrowly beaten on the 18th. Next up was Janet Griffiths who won her tie 3&2, following Janet was Sandy Bushby who was victorious on the 18th green. She was followed by Dawn Butchart who was beaten on the 17th and last was Alex Bushby who halved her tie. This left the overall match 2.5 to 2.5. Therefore under the rules of the competition the last tie must go back to the first tee and play sudden death until there is an eventual winner.

As you can see Alex and her opponent Anne went back off down the 19th which they halved. Then onto the 20th where Alex was giving a shot and unfortunately both players had a 5 which meant of course that Dunkeld make it to the next round.
It is not easy playing away from home especially on a course such as Dunkeld however I do think the team did us all proud by playing so well and making a such a close game of it!
Well done all.

GENTS SENIOR WEBSITE

Really great website for the Senior Gents Section has been set up. I have added this site onto the list of links on the right hand side of the page.

SINGLES FINAL
The winter singles final took place on Monday this week. Both finalist's Rhona McGeoghegan and Cathy McNab were ably and extremely fashionably caddied by Marion Robertson and Sally Fenner. Congratulations to both players for reaching the final.
I believe all four ladies had great fun on the course and along with the very skillful caddies we had a very talented winner in our very own Vice Captain Rhona McGeoghegan who I was told played extremely well on the day.
Rhona has done extremely well over the winter months she has been in all three winter knockout finals and has been victorious in two out of three. Well done Rhona, you have shone as bright as the star on your wand at Christmas!

VALENTINES TEXAS SCRAMBLE & PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT!
Saturday was our Valentines Texas Scramble which was followed by a wonderful meal then we were treated to another of David's entertaining nights! I will get to the entertainment later but first of all the results of the Texas Scramble. The turn out was excellent with 32 players taking part and we were delighted to be able to play to the 'big greens'! The winning score was from the team of Iain Butchart, Ian Clark, Edith Ralston and junior member Emily Aird (photo above)with a fantastic score of 55.875! In second place with a score of 59.125 was Chris Brand, Jack Scott, Rhona McGeoghegan and Mark Truswell (photo below, Rhona and Mark were unable to stay for prizegiving). Well done to both teams and a big thank you to Mixed Convenors Marion and Iain.

The attendance then rose in numbers to enjoy a fantastic a la carte meal which was closely followed by the main show, 'Play your Cards Right' hosted by our very own 'Brucie' David Norman. David certainly put a lot of effort into making the night a huge sucess. He had a televised intro which was brilliant, his very own 'Dollie Dealer' who was Lady Captain Jane Taylor and he made sure all who attended, young and old, were involved in the game. It was great fun. Well done David!! Also a huge thank you to Peter Howell who was the main sponsor on the night and gave away a massive 6 meals for two with wine at the Lands of Loyal!!

It is always great to see so many members and family staying on to enjoy the entertainment and enjoy the social side of what is indeed a friendly place to play golf!

Below is some photos of the night, bearing in mind it was a Valentines I couldn't resist the heart frame!

    JUNIORS WEBSITE

Strathmore Junior Section is being revamped! We have loads of people who are willing to give up their time to help make the Junior Section a much more important and successful part of the Club. The juniors will be spilt into three sections. The first Section with be the Elite Squad which will be made up of juniors who have a Congu Handicap and play on the 18 hole course. Iain Butchart has agreed to take these Juniors under his wing and will organise and be around for competitions. He will also advise the players of county and national competitions which they should be trying to take part in. Already he has been central in arranging our very first male junior, Allan Easton, to be accepted and coached by P&K County Gents Association at Gleneagles. Megan and Emily Aird have also been selected by P&K County Ladies Association for the same coaching.

The next squad with be the Intermediate and will be made up of players who are passed the beginners stage but not quite to the standard of Congu handicap. Fergus Martin has agreed to take these player under his wing and it is hopeful that the Blue Course will be available for them to play their competitions throughout the summer.

And last but not least will be what I think is the most important squad, the beginners. This is the squad where our future players will come from and if we can grap their attention at this stage then hopefully they will continue through the squads. Jackie Moran has agreed to look after and make this squad as much fun as possible for all the players. She is already organising there own logo and lots of fun days and competitions starting with the 'Leaping Launch' which is to taking place on Sunday 17th February.

Other volunteers are Frank Moran who will be in charge of Fund Raising and Sponsorship, Dawn Butchart who along with Jackie will take care of handicaps and Stephen Schofield who will remain as convener. Both Lady and Gent Captains, Jane and Lewis, and our President Peter Tinker have also given their full support to the numerous meetings which have been held over the winter. David Norman has also been invloved in all meetings and has generously agreed to continue to fund the coaching and will support the juniors in any way that he can. There are also lots more volunteers who have already went through disclosure to allow them to help out on days when competitions are being held. However if you are at all interested please contact us as there will be plenty to do!

We really wish this section all the very best and have set up a new website purely for them. We will post all the draws and date of competitions plus any news items of interest. I have put a link to this website along with various other links at the right hand side of this page. I will also try as best as possible to keep you up to date with all the news from the juniors!
    LADIES AWAY DAY

Rhona has asked me to remind all ladies that the entry Sheet for our Away Day to Burnt Island is on the Ladies board. If you wish to play please sign as soon as possible to enable us to provide the Golf Course with numbers.

If you can't make it to the Strathmore to sign up then please contact Rhona or myself by phone or Email to let us know you wish to take part.

    Thank you

    SAIR HEID BASH

We held our Sair Heid Bash yesterday and despite the horrible weather conditions 38 hardy souls took part. As the 11th and 12th hole were out of commission it was also decided to missed out the 10th and make the competition over 15 holes. As it was a Shot Gun Start we all finished around the same time and some fantastic scoring was returned yet again. The overall winners on the day were Peter Tinker, David Dawson, Ian Clarke and Alan Christie.

Runners up were Chris Sturgis, Stephen Schofield, Cathy McNab and Rob Milligan.
All players deserved a medal for completing the round and we were all very grateful to David Norman who provided us all with a very welcomed drink from the bar! Thanks also go to the Centre who once again presented us with a fantastic menu which along with the drink, made us feel human again and of course to Marion and Iain for the organisation on the day.
Well done all who took part.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIC

Eric Gray celebrated his birthday yesterday and along with Anne, had an open ended invitation for all members to join him. It was a super day and Eric proudly held his spot on his 'high chair'!!

We even supplied him with a tray from the kiddies high chairs!!

Anne provided him with a beautiful cake. He made a wish and blew the candles. We all guessed he wished for no more trips to the 5th pond (either by the golf ball or trolley!)

Jackie and Eric then took to the floor to show what they had both learned by watching Strictly Come Dancing !!

However judging by the scoring at the end of the performance they really should just stick to golf!
A big thank you from all of us who attended and a Very Happy Birthday Eric!

    TURKEY TROT

Yesterday was our annual Turkey Trot and after what looked like a wash out, most of us managed to get round 12 holes without getting drenched!! We even had glimpse's of sunshine!

Following the golf we all got our Christmas Hats on for the judge, David Norman, to make ad very difficult decision in choosing the 'best hat'! We had turkey hats, flashing and waggling hats, snow man hats and halo's in fact every kind of hat you could possibly imagine. The eventual winner, picked by David, was Marilyn Galbally with a wonderful creation of Baby Jesus in a crib. Well done to all of you who wore your hat! Following the announcement of the best hat we had the lucky seat draw. Each seat was given a number and as your number was called by Vice Captain and Christmas Fairy, Rhona McGeoghegan you had to take your seat and the last standing won the lucky seat prize. The winner was past Captain Annette Grewar.

Then the meal arrived and it was the most wonderful Christmas Lunch!!! We had so many choices of starter, mains and pudding and all were fantastic. We even had tablet that was kindly made by Captain Jane's mum and date and marzipan sweets made by the Fairy plus coffee and mince pies. It was a wonder we could move afterward!!

The winners of the golf were then presented with their prizes and the scoring was exceptionally good once again. In third place with 25 points Gillian Allardice, in 2nd place Sandy Bushby 27 points and the winner with a magnificent score of 28 points Birtie Buckett. Well done all.

We were then all treated to a magical visit by Santa Claus himself, and because we had all been very good, we were all given a present. It was just great!

Then Eleanor Fenwick read a poem dedicated to the Fairy whilst she did a little dance for us. It really was fun. Well done to Eleanor and Rhona for a wonderful finish to a fabulous day.

Captain Jane Taylor was thanked for providing us with a wonderful day and she in turn thanked the centre and catering staff for the wonder hospitality and food and also her committee, especially Jenny for all her hard work organising the golf, Marion for her help with the cards and scoring and Secretary Chris for her help in the organising the meal and monies.

A great day was had by all. More photos of the day are below. Just click and you will be directed to the slide show!

    IS YOUR CLUB LEGAL???

From 1 January 2008, a Rule of Golf will be introduced which will limit the 'spring-like' effect of all drivers for every golfers of every ability. This rule was announced in August 2002 and it has already been in place for all elite level competition staged by SLGA, SGU, PGA etc via a Condition of Competition, since 1 January 2003.

This 'new' Rule will affect the conformance status of some drivers currently in the marketplace and in players' bags. Golfers are, therefore, encouraged to check their own driver before January 1 2008 and replace any driver which no longer conforms. The R&A have provided two Lists one which provides a list of all conforming Drivers and one for all non-conforming clubs.

To view a list of drivers which will become non-conforming on 1 January 2008 and which are contrary to the Driving Club Condition of Competition, please click on the link below and remember that if your driver is non conforming you must NOT use it in competition, THE PENALTY IN DOING SO IS DISQUALIFICATION :

  • Jane has also placed the full list in the club house for your information. If you have any queries please contact any committee member.

    ST. ANDREWS SKITTLES NIGHT

Once again David organised a great fun night for us. Around forty members and family enjoyed a fantastic night of fun and games!! Mark and Dawn Tinker donated use of their pool table for the evening plus we had every board game imaginable. But the centre of every ones attention was, of course, the skittles!

David placed all of us in on of 4 teams and when it was your turn you got three balls to try and knock down as many skittles as possible. The best of score after 4 rounds determined the winning team. Which was Team D. FIREWORK EXTRAVAGANZA

(Click on the arrows to watch the clips)

At the AGM David informed us that the Firework Dinner Dance which was to be held on Saturday was cancelled due to lack of support. However he did say that if 20 or more of us turned up he would set off some of the fireworks. Never one to turn down a challenge and after very little encouragement more than 40 members and their children turned up at the club house where a host of games and fun were organised. Firstly we had REAL judges for 'Strictly Come Dancing' which was on the 'big screen' while we all enjoyed a wonderful meal. Frankie Moran did us proud and brought along his 'Wii'. Following 'Strictly' we had 4 teams of 4 players take on the 'Strathmore Bowling Challenge' it was brilliant fun but some of our lady members got somewhat excited by it all as you can see from the video and photos.

David then treated us to a fantastic Firework display. What a brilliant event! Really breath taking. Well done David they were truly amazing as you can see from the very short clip above! Sorry didnt manage to get a longer one!

When we all came back from the display we held a matchplay 'Tiger Woods Challenge Golf Championship' on Frankie's Wii, as you can see from the photos below it was such good fun. The eventual winners were Julieann and her son Robbie. However we now know how the Gents past Captain will fill his time over the winter months! The whole night was a huge success and our sincere thanks go to David for a fantastic evening enjoyed by all age groups, also to Frankie Moran for bringing along his game for us all to play! Looking forward to the next one already!

I do hope you enjoy the slide show and the new video clips! I just hope you all don't run away now when I appear with my camera in hand!

    HALLOWEEN STRATHMORE STYLE!

Centre manager David Norman and his wife Lorraine hosted what was a fantastic evening of fun for both adults and children alike. The Club House was completely transformed, the work involved was huge. The decorations and music were more than we could ever imagine, just brilliant! David and Lorraine really threw themselves into a wonderful party night. With games and fun for all of us. Firstly the children had to search for hidden spoons in the car park, then we had eating sticky buns and burying our heads in rice krispies to rescue hidden marshmallows! We had to lift Maltesers with straws and place in bowls! Wrapping unsuspecting adults with toilet roll 'mummy style', musical statues and much more! There were prizes for all the games and also best dressed boy and girl and gent and lady.

As you can see some of the costumes were brilliant! Fabulous fun was had by everyone if you didn't go you missed a tremendous evening so settle down and watch some of the fun in the photos below. Thanks go to Marion who supplied some of the photos! and many many thanks Lorraine and David for a wonderful evening!
