LUCKY 13th

13 is not an unlucky number for some as junior member Matthew Bell proved on Saturday when he notched up his first hole in one! Matthew who is 16 played a 6 iron on the 159 yard par three. His playing partners were, Graham Haynes and Alistair Aird.

Matthew has had many sucesses already this season, he has won the Bellhaven qualifier, the April Medal and with a nett 65 on Saturday he also won the Gents Spring Meeting. Matthew started the season at 17 and with only a month of the season gone is down to 11.

Fantastic Matthew very well done!
FANNY AND BIRTIE DO US PROUD

Well done to Fanny Christie and Birtie Buckett who played in the second round of the Daily Mail Foursomes against Blairgowrie at Blairgowrie and won 5 & 4. Great news!

Fanny and Birtie now progress to the next round and we all wish them the very best of luck.

WELL DONE SANDY

Congratulations go to Sandy Bushby who qualified 16th in the Angus County Championship. Very well done!

Unfortunately Sandy was knocked out in the first round of the knockout stages by the top qualifier Heather Anderson who has reached the semi final stages of the championship.

SPRING MEETING

On a busy weekend with lots to report I will start with the main event! Our Spring Meeting took place on what was a glorious day. A great turn out once again and of course some super scores. Our overall winner was Sally Fenner with a nett 70, closely followed by junior member Megan Aird on nett 71. Best scratch score of the day was
Alexandra Bushby with 76. Well done all. CSS 72.
We also had some spot prizes:

Nearest the Pin Sandy Bushby:

Longest Drive Silver was won by Annette Grewar

Longest Drive Bronze, Mary Menzies
Most stayed for a late lunch and cakes!!
Full results were as follows:
Sally Fenner (21) 70
Megan Aird (17) 71
Mary Menzies (23) 72 bih
Jane Taylor (12 ) 72
Annette Grewar (15) 72
Alexandra Bushby (4) 72
Two lucky ladies reduced their handicaps they were:
Sally Fenner was 21 now 19.9 playing 20
Megan Aird was 17 now 16.4 playing 16
And least said about the 4th bunker the better!! However I am very pleased to report that Iain and I took part in the Montrose Mixed Greensomes yesterday and scored a scratch 71 nett 64.6. The par is 73 so we were delighted, there was only one scratch prize and we were 2nd, however we won 1st place in the handicap section. So that made up for said bunker!

    RULES OFFICIAL

When Jane asked if I would be interested in going on a Rules Official's course which was to be organised by the SGU and the R&A I was very happy to take part, however at the beginning of the year I received the 'Rules and Decisions Book', example papers and the information regarding what the exam entailed I was a little apprehensive if not scared! Participants had to learn the first 28 rules and subsections and familiarise themselves with the decisions pertaining to them all! No mean feat when that part of the book is 436 pages long. I decided to set aside a few hours every day and even took the book and papers on holiday.
After a few months of study a two day course was held at the Headquarters of the SGU. This was both enjoyable and informative with talks from SGU officials, International Referees and R&A officials. There were also slide shows and a practical session held at Drumoig golf course. At the end of the course was the dreaded exam. This was in two parts. The first section of the first exam was a 20 question paper which gave different scenario's which you had to know the rule number and subsection of each one, without reference books. The second part again was 25 questions on a true or false basis again without reference books. The second part of the exam lasted 90 mins and although we were permitted the reference books it was very tough!

However three weeks later I have received my results. The required pass was 70%, the average mark for the course was 71.6% and I am really pleased to say I managed 85%. This now qualifies me to referee at Club and Area level. So I would like to thank Jane for having faith in me and should you have any queries regarding rules please ask, if I don't know the answer straight away I now know where to look!

    Thanks

    Dawn

    MAIL ON SUNDAY

The team from Brechin were very friendly and welcoming. We wish them well in the next round.

    CAPTAIN'S DRIVE IN

Saturday was our official opening to the season 2007 and what a glorious day it was! Our Captains were there to greet 90 members with a very welcomed glass of Buzz Fizz then off we went to place our flags where we thought their drives would land!

Gent's Captain Jack Scott, Lady's Captain Jane Taylor, President Peter Tinker, Lady's Vice-Captain Rhona McGeoghegan and Gents Vice-Captain Lewis Duncan took a 'photo call' then it was time for the big 'Drive off' Both Jack and Jane played excellent shots off the tee to their huge relief I am sure! (However I am reliably informed they were also relieved that they did not get up close with the ducks!)

We then had a 'Shotgun Start' which was brilliantly organised by Marion and Iain our Mixed Convener's. David Norman kindly provided a very welcomed 'wee dram' at our half way house.

After our round we were all provided with a finger buffet which was excellent as always. Marion and Iain were kept very busy tallying up the scores on the board.

Peter Tinker said a few words to welcome the members and thanking the organisers then Iain Butchart announced the winners of the nearest the Captains Drives, Dave Fin
dlay was nearest the Gent's Captain and Brian Park was nearest the Lady's Captain's.

Dawn Butchart was the winner of best lady with 39 points and Ian Taylor was best Gent with 42 points.

Then it was crunch time to find our who won were the winners of Pat's Putter and both Jack and Jane were delighted to lead the winning Captains Team.

A fantastic day was had by all the members with special thanks to the Centre for allowing a Shotgun start, to the catering staff and David Norman for his hospitality. To the two Captains for hosting the day. Also special thanks to the organiser's Marion and Iain who put a lot of hours into the event. To view more photos of the day click on this link:
    Captains Drive In
Annette Grewar was also presented with her Hole in One plaque which whe achieved whilst visiting John and Mary Menzies in America. John was very happy to do the honours:
