The Turkey Trot

What a lovely day we had for our Turkey Trot, the sun was shining, the sky was blue and the golf course was covered in snow! However, the lack of golf did not dampen our spirits. The centre put on a delicious lunch and Rhona, Marion, Margaret Hunter and Margaret Strachan provided us with entertainment! Edith Ralston fought off some very stiff competition to win 'best hat' and Gillian Allardice was sitting in the 'lucky seat'.

The afternoon continued with the arrival of an overweight elf and his very short legged reindeer! They were shortly followed by a 'secret' Santa Claus bearing sacks of presents.

Thanks go to Rhona, the committee and the centre for putting on such a lovely day for everyone.

TURKEY TROT UPDATE
The bad news ladies is that our golf course is currently under a very thick blanket of snow and with overnight temperatures of -5 forecast we can safely say that there will be NO golf played tomorrow (ie the Turkey Trot).
However, our delicious Christmas Lunch and other festivities WILL go ahead as planned. Please arrive at 12 noon wearing your festive hat and more importantly remember to bring your ' Santa present' as unfortunatley on this occasion if you don't give, then you can't get!!
Lunch will be served at 1.00pm. See you all then.

HOLE IN ONE FOR OUR CAPTAIN!

What a great way to start your Captaincy! Rhona McGeoghegan had a fantastic hole in one at the 6th hole on Monday as she was playing in the Winter League with Sheena Peacock and Cathy McNab. Tradition generally dictates that taking on the role of Captain guarantees fairly uneventful golf for the duration of your term. However, never one to follow the rules of convention, Rhona hit her ace with her rescue club, straight onto the green and in it went. What a fantastic way to start your year Rhona with your first hole in one.

Congratulations from us all!!!

CLUB AGM & PRIZEGIVING

The Club held a their very successful AGM and Prizegiving on Friday 7th November. Outgoing Lady Captain, Jane Taylor, welcomed 95 members to the meeting, which saw Sandy Bushby elected as our first ever Lady President, a huge honour for her and we wish her a very successful term in Office. Also elected onto Management Committee were Sally Fenner as Club Secretary, and Graham Haynes as Treasurer.

Sheena Scott stood down as Treasurer having served 6 years on Committee and was thanked for her considerable hard work. Lewis presened her with a set of wine glasses as a small token of our sincere thanks.

FINALS DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES

AT DALMAHOY

Mother and daughter pairing of Sandy and Alexandra Bushby did themselves proud at Dalmahoy this week when they took part in the Finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes event. It is estimated that over 190,000 players start out at the beginning of the tournament having to qualify not just from their club but then having to win through 7 further rounds of matchplay competition just to make it into the prestigious last 16. The horrendous weather conditions of gale force winds and driving rain meant that the Finals had to be reduced from 4 rounds of matchplay to 2 rounds of stableford which was unfortunate and the first time in the 48 year history of the event that the winners have been decided in this way. Nonetheless the weather did not dampen the spirits too much and despite not winning through to the last 4 on day 2, Sandy and Alex, accompanied by their fab 4 supporters, made the most of their time away and took full advantage of the hospitality on offer. A fantastic time was had by all and what a wonderful achievement to have reached the the last 16. Well done Sandy and Alex! More photos to follow.....

DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES FINALS

Dalmahoy is the destination on Sunday for Sandy and Alexandra Bushby as they compete in the Finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes event having already won their way through 7 tough rounds of knockouts. Sunday is a practice day with 4 more rounds of matchplay to be played over Monday and Tuesday. Accompanying them on their exciting trip are Jane, Jenni, Marion and Sally who were lucky enough to be invited along as 'supporters'. We wish Sandy and Alexandra well and hope that a fun time is had by all (guaranteed!)

Alexandra Triumphs Over Carly to Win Prestigious Title

Alexandra Bushby was crowned SLGA Champion of Champions today as she fought her way into a one hole play off against the hugely talented Carly Booth having shot a magnificent 76 (par 75 ,css 77) over the imposing 6,300 yard Glasgow Gailes course. Playing in tough windy conditions Alex held her nerve to hole an 8 foot birdie putt in the play-off to lift the title for the first time. This is an incredible achievment for Alexandra who qualified having won the North of Scotland Open earlier this year. And as if that wasn't exciting enough, her gross 76 cut her handicap to 0.3 which means that for the first time in her golfing career Alexandra is now playing off a Scratch handicap.

What a fabulous end to a wonderfully successful season and our enormous congratulations go to you Alex!

Good Luck Girls (and Alan)!
Two of our most talented young ladies will be representing Strathmore in separate events this Sunday.
Young Emily Aird qualified for the final of the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters competition to be played on the Queens Course at Gleneagles on Sunday. Another of our Juniors, Alan Easton, qualified in the Boys event, so all in all it is a very exciting day for the Strathmore youngsters and we wish them both the very best of luck!
Meanwhile Alexandra Bushby will be competing in the SLGA Champion of Champions event which is being played over the challenging Glasgow Gailes course, also on Sunday. Alex qualified for this prestigious tournament having won the North of Scotland event earlier in the year. Well done Alex, we wish you well!

WOODEN SPOON

Revenge was sweet for the Gents last Sunday when they successfully won the annual battle of the sexes and handed the Wooden Spoon back to the Ladies Section. Perhaps the Ladies were feeling a little too relaxed having triumphed over the Gents in the Not The Ryder Cup match a couple of weeks earlier. No doubt the Gents will claim that the Wooden Spoon carries the greater glory. Perhaps, but revenge will be all the sweeter next year ladies!!

SCOTTISH COUNTY FINALS
At the weekend Perth and Kinross Ladies County Team went to the Scottish County Finals at Inchmarlo Golf Club in Aberdeenshire and two Strathmore members were involved, Dawn as County Captain and Alexandra as a team member.
Over three days Perth and Kinross played against the other counties who had qualified - Renfrewshire, Borders and Fife. The team had a disappointing start losing to Renfewshire on the first day 7-2 but came fighting back to beat Borders 8-1 on day two! On day three they played Fife and unfortunately lost 5-4 and finished overall in third place. Fife won the trophy with three straight wins but P&K did give them a scare in the morning winning the foursomes 2-1! Thanks go to Strathmore members Iain Butchart and Janet Griffiths who kindly came up for the whole weekend to caddy and David Douglas who came to support the team.
NOT THE RYDER CUP

The glorious September sunshine on Sunday must have inspired the Ladies as they triumphed over the Gents in the bi-annual Not The Ryder Cup match. Gents Captain on the day, Graham Haynes, humbly declared that the gents were just getting 'warmed up' for the even more fiercely contested Wooden Spoon in a couple of weeks time. Fighting talk indeed. Come on the Ladies!

OUR WEE WONDERS

I was sure you would all be interested in the fantastic news the Junior Section had this weekend! Our youngest member Matthew Sime along with Junior Girl member Kirsti Brodie, made it into the finals of the Wee Wonders which was held on Saturday and Sunday at St. Andrews. They both played fantastic golf and Kirsty completed the weekend in 3rd postition in her section. Kirstie is the nicest wee girl and smiled her way round the course both days. A great credit to her family and Strathmore. Well done Kirsty.

But the most amazing news is that our wee Matthew who just recently turned 5, has been selected to represent GB&I in the Wee Wonders Tournament in America next year. The GB&I team take on America over the Pinehurst Course in North Carolina next July. What amazing news for a wee lad who only just played on a Golf Course for the very first time in April.

We in the junior section are so very proud of all our juniors and I thought you would all appreciate to be informed of this fantastic achievement. And to think when his mum asked him what he would like if he won the competition his reply was "Some more golf balls and a poke of chips!"

Well done Matthew you certainly are our wee star. I will post a photo tomorrow!

YOUR GOLF CLUB NEEDS A NEW TREASURER!

We are sorry to say that Sheena Scott has decided to stand down as Treasurer of Strathmore Golf Club as of the AGM in October. Sheena has done a wonderful job for a number of years but has now decided to call it a day. We all thank Sheena for her commitment and hard work on behalf of the club and its members.

This leaves us with a vacancy to fill. Is there a member out there reading this thinking, "I could do that" if so please get in contact any committee member to get more details. We would like to get a new treasurer in place as soon as possible so that they can work along side Sheena for a few months before taking over. It is important for any club that its finances are well looked after so it is important that we fill this role. So if you're sat there with some spare time and fancy getting more involved in the running of the golf club nows the time to act.

Please contact any committee member for more information.

YOUNG QUAICH

I was very lucky to be out with our winner yesterday. Lesley Haynes played great golf and returned a brilliant 42 stableford points a full 6 points clear of the field. Lesley's score was no mean feat keeping in mind the wet weather we had last night. Very impressive indeed. Well done.

Not only did I have the pleasure of watching Lesley play well, I am also delighted to give her a very well deserved handicap cut. Lesley was 19, she is now 16.8, new playing handicap, 17.

Well done!

The finals of the Barnados Day took place yesterday at Arbroath Golf club and our representative was Sandy Bushby. Sandy won her way to the finals with an earlier qualifying round at Strathmore this year.

Well done Sandy.

CONGRATULATIONS EMILY

Emily Aird has taken part in Scotland’s biggest junior handicap event, the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters. With hundreds of boys and girls from clubs across the country playing for a place in the grand final at Gleneagles, home of the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Five regional finals are taking part during the summer holidays from Duff House Royal in the north to Galashiels in the Borders. Emily played in the regional final at Ratho Park yesterday and has played her way into the final in October.

This is a fantastic achievement for Emily and we wish her every success on October 12th!

Another Strathmore junior has also made it to the finals of the boys section of the competition and he is Junior Club Champion Allan Easton.

Well done from all in the Ladies Section!

CONGRATULATIONS ALEX

Congratulations go to Alexandra Bushy who qualified into the match-play stages of the English Women’s Open Mid-Amateur Championship at Wallasey. The Tournament is open to players aged 25 or over. Alex made it all the way into the semi-finals yesterday where she was unfortunately beaten by Warwickshire’s Charlotte Dalton. Alex played great golf all week winning her first match against Welsh internationalist Laura Collin (John O'Gaunt) by 1 hole. She then met Stephanie Evans (Vale of Llangollen) in round two again winning by 1 hole. Yesterday her quarterfinal was against Kate Whitmore (Sandiway) and Alex again repeated the score line from Wednesday by winning again by 1 hole. She then made her way into the Semi-Final yesterday afternoon and even following a wonderful display of golf including an eagle 2 on the 267 yard sixth where she drove the green and holed a four foot putt, she failed to continue her winning streak losing the match 4 and 3.

A great achievement to reach the semi-finals Alex, well done!
